With the much missed William Hartnell as the first incarnation of the Doctor, this original unedited classic adventure returns us to the days he first seized our imaginations and begged the question 'Doctor Who?'

Visiting Britain in 1963 the Doctor's granddaughter has become a pupil at an ordinary school. A strange amalgam of teenage normality and uncanny intelligence she whets the curiosity of two teachers who become inextricably involved in the Doctor's strange travels. Proving that time goes round in circles, the Doctor blasts them back to a pre-civilized age of the Great Cold where tribal leaders battle for supremacy in a race to make fire. Thrown into the cave of skulls, the Doctor and his companions soon realize that their lives depend on two alternatives: making fire without matches or escaping through the forest of fear...

Review [****]
This is a strange review. First of all, the story is lost. There's not even any clips available (If you disregard the ending of Edge of destruction that is) so what I'm reviewing here is the Bruce Robinsons telesnap reconstruction, the soundtrack and about one hundred different pictures stretched out over 7 episodes. My initial thought was that this would take a long time to watch but strangely enough it didnt. Two sessions, both around an hour and a half. The story is epic and concerns the capture of the Tardis by Marco Polo who wants to present it as a gift to Kublai Khan, hopefully releasing him from his vows and letting him return to Italy. Now, this is something the Doctor and his companions arent to happy with. There's is also a spy and a traitor involed.

This is great DW. It moves at a brisk pace and is always entertaining. The acting is generally good throughout and its great to see (hear) William Hartnell at his best. This one is in the top 5 of my 'Lost Stories I Want Found' list.
